Summary

What the record shows

OneCoin was marketed through a global multi-level-marketing network as a cryptocurrency and “Bitcoin killer.” US prosecutors said purchasers invested more than $4 billion worldwide. Co-founder Karl Sebastian Greenwood pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years in prison in September 2023.

Co-founder Ruja Ignatova has been charged in the United States and remains on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list. Those charges are allegations against her personally and have not been adjudicated because she has not been arrested or tried.

Key findings

What is established and what is not

  • Greenwood’s guilty plea and sentence establish his role in the OneCoin fraud scheme.
  • Court records and the FBI describe a centrally controlled product whose purported value was set internally rather than by an open market.
  • The legal status of different participants varies: some have been convicted, while the charges against Ignatova remain unproven unless and until adjudicated.

Response and denials

The other side of the record

OneCoin historically denied the reporting. In a statement supplied to the BBC, the company asserted that OneCoin met the definition of a cryptocurrency and attacked the BBC investigation as untruthful and not independent.

That corporate response predates Greenwood’s guilty plea and 2023 sentence. No current response from Ignatova was identified in the reviewed sources; she remains a fugitive and has not appeared in court to answer the charges.

Global Scam Report evaluation

Summary assessment

Fraud scheme established as to convicted participants — very high confidence. Allegations against the fugitive Ruja Ignatova must remain expressly qualified because she has been charged but not tried. The company’s historical denial is included for completeness but conflicts with subsequent guilty pleas, convictions and sentencing records.

Scope qualificationThis profile does not treat every person who promoted or purchased OneCoin as knowingly participating in fraud. Individual responsibility depends on evidence and legal findings.
